fix your gaze and find spiritual balance.

fix your gaze and find spiritual balance

Chaos surrounds us and we can quickly find ourselves stumbling, staggering, and losing heart if we don’t fix our gaze on our immovable God.

Finding stability, strength, and balance is God’s desire for our lives.

Funny enough, finding stability, strength, and balance is also been the goal for me while I’ve been a patient.

Finding Physical Balance

Have you ever tried to work on your balance?

I’ve been a physical therapy patient for over 10 years. Within those 10 years, I’ve seen dozens of different physical therapists all over the United States.

When you have a connective tissue disease that affects every joint of your body you tend to end up in PT most of your life.

As soon as they seem to have strengthened one joint, then another joint starts acting up.

No matter what joint they are focusing on and no matter what therapist I’m seeing there is something that they always try and improve.

Every visit we work on my balance.

Overall my balance isn’t that bad, but they all know that if I can strengthen my balance, then the rest of my joints can find some extra stability.

Try It Out

10 years of working on your balance and you will find yourself learning some tricks.

One of my favorite tricks is to find a fixed position in the room at eye level and focus solely on that point.

Try it out, it works!

Stand up and lift one leg.

At first, try looking around and try looking down at your leg.

Then, hold the same position, but this time find a spot on the wall at your eye level and focus solely on that point.

I’ll wait…

Results Are In

Now tell me, how did round one go?

If you’re anything like me, then your leg was shaking, you might’ve done a few staggered hops trying to stay on your feet, and maybe if you were really committed to the task, then you might have found yourself on the ground.

How about round two? If you were able to find that fixed spot on your horizon how much easier was it to hold your balance?

When you locked your gaze on the fixed spot you found stability, you found strength, and you found balance.

It doesn’t matter how long you were able to hold that position, even if it was just for 3 seconds, for those 3 seconds you found your balance.

When I first started working on my balance finding a fixed position in the room was hard for me.

My eyes seemed to want to look everywhere, and yet nowhere in particular.

Once I figured out how to find a fixed spot on my horizon, it became easier each time to do so.

Keeping your balance, strength, and stability takes practice. The more you practice, the longer you can stay balanced.

Where Is Your Gaze

Friends, where is your gaze today?

If your gaze is everywhere, and yet nowhere in particular, then you are probably finding yourself staggering, shaking, and maybe even on the ground in despair.

There is a lot of chaos in our lives right now.

With news articles, social media, and people all around us promoting the chaos it is easy to be looking everywhere, and yet nowhere in particular.

It is time to fix your gaze on Jesus.

The Bible promises us that when we fix our eyes on Him, then we will find stability, strength, and balance.

Personal Challenge

A few weeks ago, Hillsong Church Kansas City did 21 days of looking up and leveling up.

It was 21 days of encouragement to get your mind right in the middle of this chaotic world.

On day 9 Pastor Brenden Brown of Hillsong San Francisco shared an encouragement. You can watch the short video below.

After watching this video, I felt God turn this encouragement into a personal challenge for me to find my fixed spot on the horizon and meet His gaze.

God is immovable; He is our fixed position on the horizon.

If you look down and around you will stumble, and eventually, you will fall.

But, when you lock eyes with Jesus the rest of the world might keep stumbling around you, but you will remain stable, strengthened, and balanced.

You will not grow weary and you will not lose heart if you focus your gaze on our immovable God.

Just like it takes practice to stay physically balanced, it takes repetition to stay mentally and spiritually balanced.

Every time you find yourself looking everywhere, and yet nowhere in particular, challenge yourself to fix your gaze on your immovable God.

Locking eyes with Jesus might take a few tries in order to find Him on the horizon and through the chaos. But, He is there and He promises you that He will give you stability, strength, and balance.

I challenge you to fix your gaze on Jesus this week!

“Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author, and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy set before Him endured the cross, scorning it’s shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. Consider Him who endured such opposition from sinful men, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart.”

Hebrews 12:2-3
